Organization Structures
Organization Structures , Projects are impacted by , and have an impact on , the cultural norms , management policies , and procedures for the organizations of which they are apart , one of the Main forms of influence is how the company is organized , as the organizational structure will dictate who the project manager goes to for help with resources , how communications must be handled , and other aspects of the project management ,Organization Structures are : Functional , Matrix , Composite & Projectized , Matrix Organizations can have the following forms : Weak , Balanced & Strong .
Functional Organization
Such organizations are grouped by areas of specialization within different functional areas; here projects generally occur within one department, employees transmit the request to the head of department who communicate the request to other department head, Project manager here is working mainly as coordinator and have very limited authority.

- Project Manager’s Authority : Little or none
- Project Manager’s Role : Part time
- Resource Availability : Little or none
- Project Budget : Managed by Functional Manager
- Project Management Staff : Part Time
Weak Matrix Organization
- Team members reports to 2 bosses, project manager and functional manager, communications goes from team members to both bosses ,in weak matrix power rests with functional manager and project manager acts like coordinator or expeditor .
- Communication is Complex .
- Project Manager’s Authority : Low
- Project Manager’s Role : Part time
- Resource Availability : Low
- Project Budget : Managed by Functional Manager
- Project Management Staff : Part Time
Balanced Matrix Organization
- Team members reports to 2 bosses, project manager and functional manager, communications goes from team members to both bosses ,in balanced matrix power is shared between functional manager and project manager .
- In any of the PMI Questions , if the Organizational structure is not mentioned , consider balanced matrix .
- Project Manager’s Authority : Low to moderate
- Project Manager’s Role : Part time
- Resource Availability : Low to moderate
- Project Budget : Shared
- Project Management Staff : Part Time
Strong Matrix Organization
- Team members reports to 2 bosses, project manager and functional manager, communications goes from team members to both bosses . Project Manager’s Authority : Moderate to high
- Project Manager’s Role : Full time
- Resource Availability : Moderate to high
- Project Budget : Project Manager
- Project Management Staff : Full Time
Projectized Organization
- Team members reports to 2 bosses, project manager and functional manager, communications goes from team members to both bosses . Project Manager’s Authority : Moderate to high
- Project Manager’s Role : Full time
- Resource Availability : Moderate to high
- Project Budget : Project Manager
- Project Management Staff : Full Time
Composite Organization
– Very similar to Strong Matrix except that in some projects there is no involvement of the project manager .
– Project Manager’s Authority : High to almost total
- Project Manager’s Role : Full time
- Resource Availability : High to almost total
- Project Budget : Project Manager
- Project Management Staff : Full Time
