    To qualify for the PMP exam, you need a four-year degree (a bachelor's degree or the global equivalent). You also need a minimum amount of project-leadership experience, based on PMI's current eligibility rules. And you need 35 hours of project management education.

    The July 2026 update changed the domain weighting to People (33%), Process (41%), and Business Environment (26%). It also added more coverage of AI in project management, sustainability, and value-driven delivery. The exam still tests predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches.

    You get three attempts to pass the PMP® exam within one year of eligibility approval. You pay a re-examination fee for the second and third attempts.     The PMP® exam has 180 total questions. 170 are scored, and 10 are unscored test questions. You get 240 minutes to complete the exam, with two optional 10-minute breaks. This applies to the exam launched on July 9, 2026. Question types include multiple-choice, multiple response, matching, hotspot, and fill-in-the-blank.

    No. PMI® does not set an expiry date for contact hours, as long as you keep your certificate as proof. There is no deadline. But you must earn the hours before you submit your application. For example, if you earn hours in 2024, they are still valid for an application in 2026 or later.

    The PMP certification is valid for three years. To maintain it, you need to earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) within each 3-year cycle.

    First, check your eligibility. You need a four-year degree, the required project-leadership experience under PMI's current rules, and 35 contact hours of project management training. Then pass the PMP certification exam to earn your credential.

    If you are a PMI member, you need to pay USD 60 as a renewal fee. For non-PMI members, the renewal fee is USD 150.

    The PMP exam is difficult, even for experienced project managers. How much time you need depends on your prior knowledge and how hard you study. With steady effort, most candidates prepare in about three months, using a structured PMP training program.
