PMI Study Hall is PMI's own study tool for the PMP exam. You buy it as a subscription, and it includes lessons, flashcards, a learning plan, practice questions, and full-length practice exams.
An independent simulator, such as the Elite Minds PMP Exam Simulator, is usually a one-time purchase that focuses on full-length practice exams.

This PMP Study Hall vs independent simulator comparison works as a short PMI Study Hall review and a PMP exam simulator comparison in one. What is PMI Study Hall?
PMI Study Hall is PMI's digital study companion for the PMP exam. It works on desktop and mobile. It combines short lessons and videos with practice questions, mini exams, full-length practice exams, flashcards, and a performance dashboard. Each practice question includes a rationale and an explanation.
PMI sells two tiers, Essentials and Plus. Essentials includes 2 full-length practice exams and 10 mini exams. PMI Study Hall Plus includes 3 full-length practice exams and 20 mini exams. Both tiers include 330 extra practice questions. Both are now aligned to the 2026 Examination Content Outline, and the older pre-July 2026 versions are no longer sold.
What is an independent simulator?
Independent simulators are made by training providers outside PMI. Most focus on realistic, timed practice. The Elite Minds PMP Exam Simulator has 1,440 questions in 8 full-length mock exams of 180 questions each. Every question has an explanation, and your results are shown domain by domain, so you can see which areas need more work. It is updated for the July 2026 exam. It is a one-time purchase with one year of access, sold alone or as part of the Complete PMP Boot Camp.
Key differences
Access model: subscription or one-time payment
This is the clearest difference. Study Hall gives you 3 months of access, and then PMI bills you every quarter. Your total cost depends on how long you study. An independent simulator is usually one payment for a full year, so the cost stays the same even if your preparation takes longer than planned.
Example: You plan to study for five months. With Study Hall, you pay for the first three months, and then for one more quarter. With a one-time simulator, you pay once and still have seven months of access left after your planned exam date.
Number of full-length practice exams
Study Hall Plus has 3 full-length exams and 20 mini exams, for about 1,070 questions in total. The Elite Minds simulator has 8 full-length exams, for 1,440 questions. Full-length exams matter because the real exam is 180 questions in 240 minutes. More full-length practice helps you build the pacing and focus you need on exam day. Mini exams are useful in a different way: they help you practice in short sessions.
Learning content or focused practice
Study Hall is a learning tool and a practice tool in one. It has lessons, videos, flashcards, and games next to its questions. The Elite Minds simulator is a practice tool only. If you want one product that teaches and tests, Study Hall fits that need. If you already have a course and want more full-length practice, a simulator fits better.
Explanations and reporting
Both options explain their answers, and both show your performance. Study Hall gives a rationale for each question and a performance dashboard. The Elite Minds simulator gives an explanation for each question and shows your results by exam domain. Whichever tool you use, the key point is the same: read every explanation, including for the questions you answered correctly.
Question style and realism
PMI builds Study Hall itself, so some candidates say its question style feels closest to the real exam. That is a reasonable expectation. An independent simulator cannot claim the same official source. Its strengths are a larger number of full-length exams and a single, fixed price. This is a real trade-off, not a reason to reject either option.
Which should you choose?
The best PMP practice exams for you depend on how you study, how long you study, and what you already own.
- Choose PMI Study Hall if you want PMI's own practice questions, you are comfortable with a subscription, and you want lessons and flashcards in the same tool.
- Choose an independent simulator if you want more full-length exams, a one-time price, and results shown by domain.
- Use both if your budget allows. Many candidates use Study Hall for PMI's question style and an independent simulator for more full-length timed practice.
Ask yourself two questions. How long will I study? And do I already have a course? Your answers usually point to the right choice.
Common mistakes
- Assuming one option is better for everyone. They are built for different purposes.
- Forgetting that Study Hall renews every quarter when you plan your budget.
- Practicing only with mini exams instead of full-length, timed exams.
- Using a simulator that has not been updated for the July 2026 exam, from any provider.
- Checking only whether an answer was right or wrong, without reading the explanation.
